I make abstract stone sculptures inspired by plants and fungi. I love to create textural, organic, sensual shapes which celebrate the fecundity of nature. The spirals and intersecting, curving planes of the stone’s surface may also reference seed cases, shells, insects and fossils. I prefer to work in limestone, preferably from the UK, and carve all of my sculptures with a traditional mallet and chisels. In 2020 I made a series of carvings for my project ‘Nature on the Line,’ using Cotswold limestones and Kenilworth Red Sandstone. I’ve also used Purbeck Freestone from Dorset and Maltese Limestone. Each summer I try to attend a stone carving festival on the Isle of Purbeck, where the landscape itself is like a sculpture.
